Kismet Teen Takeover is Back!

On June 7, Kismet hosted the students for the second annual Kismet Teen Takeover!   Students spent the day preparing ingredients and transforming the dining room into their own teen-led restaurant!  All proceeds from food sales went towards the Community Lunch program at the Initiative, and guests have the opportunity to make additional pledges to help grow the program.

Kismet’s Chef Crystal Maderia has been working with the Initiative to develop a high

school farm to school curriculum which has become the cornerstone of the health and nutrition curriculum, despite serious funding obstacles (the program depends 100% on donations of equipment, labor, and ingredients). We believe that this pilot program empowers students to nourish themselves and their communities through real-life, hands-on experiences.

Students cooked a West African meal to host Mabika Goma, a Congolese scholar & activist working with refugee communities in Burlington during last year’s block on global migration and displacement.

Last year, students at the Initiative broke ground ontheir very first school vegetable garden, and we are already harvesting and eating greens from the greenhouse! Chef Crystal meets with the students weekly to prepare meals completely from scratch using whole foods ingredients, to eat together with guests from the community.  The students are energetic and inspired and have lots of ideas of how the “Community Lunch” program can grow.  The Initiative has plans to purchase a licensed food trailer which will serve as the school kitchen classroom, as well as a vehicle for future student projects centered around food, including community service, job readiness, and fundraising for our non-profit school.
